For the first time in Olympic history, the event hall of the opening and closing ceremony is to be dismantled and reused after being used solely for the event. Unlike a normal building that is rooted firmly in the ground and carries a long history and memory, there is a need for a different approach. The site where the opening and the closing ceremonies are to be held is divided into three respective areas by the mountain, road, and the river. It is a place that can hardly accommodate an event for about 40 days in its tension and its excitement for the people that come from all over the world. However, if one was to follow the road and go across the mountain and the waters, one would find, close to the village, a site with a typical high mountain landscape of Korea. The idea of the masterplan is to build a new road that unites the three pieces of land together as one, and to let the people engage with the landscape of Pyeongchang through it. Through the metaphor ‘the road to Pyeongchang’, the masterplan for the opening and closing ceremony hall of 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics is to not only exhibit the landscape of Pyeongchang, but to express in a modern way the unique Korean spatial composition that can be observed from how the homes and villages are formed in harmony with the natural landscape.
